Master Scholarships for International Students, University of Bern, Switzerland

Deadline: 1 December 2011
Open to: Applicants must have graduated at the latest by the end of July 2012 with at least a Bachelor’s degree in the wished field of study outside of Switzerland
Scholarship: 1,600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master’s programme
Description:
The University of Bern offers top quality across the board: it enjoys special recognition in leading-edge disciplines, is reputed for the excellent quality of its teaching, offers a delightful setting, and a campus environment intimately linked to the social, economic and political life of the city. The Universität Bern offers six Master Grants for the academic year 2012/13 for excellent international students.
For further information about the Master’s programmes (to display the possibilities for the masters, please click here) offered at the university, please contact the concerned Department directly. All Master’s programmes of the University of Bern are offered except “Biomedical Sciences”.
Scholarship
The grant consists of 1,600 CHF per month for the duration of the Master’s programme (standard period of study).
Application files will be examined by a selection committee. Criteria for selection are academic excellence and the candidate’s potential and motivation.
Eligibility
- Applicants must have graduated at the latest by the end of July 2012 with at least a Bachelor’s degree in the wished field of study
- This Bachelor’s or Master’s degree must be from a non-Swiss university
- The applicants permanent place of residence up to now must have been outside of Switzerland
How to apply?

- Curriculum vitae (max. 5’000 characters without blanks)
- Letter of motivation with objectives
- 2 letters of recommendation from professors of your current home university (with institutional letter paper and signature)
- Evidence of sufficient language proficiency in German or English according to the language of instruction of the intended Master’s programme (German: C1; English: B2)
- certified copies of the Bachelor’s Diploma and transcript of the grades obtained during the Bachelor’s studies
or recent confirmation (not older than 3 months) by the home university that the Bachelor’s degree (in the same study field as the intended Master’s programme) will be completed by the end of July 2012 (with a list of grades obtained up to now)
- Copy of record of school-leaving examination (i.e. university entrance qualification)
- 2 passport photos
- Copy of passport
- For the Master’s programme “Biomedical Engineering”: GRE General Test

Finnish Government Scholarship Pool

Open to: Master’s level degree holders from the countries listed below
Scholarship: A monthly allowance of EUR 1200. The allowance is sufficient for one person only.
Description:
The Finnish Government offers scholarships of 3-9 months for Doctoral level studies, research and teaching at a higher education institution in Finland. The Finnish Government Scholarship Pool programme is open to young researchers from all academic fields. The scholarships can not be applied for post-Doctoral studies or research.
The scholarships are based mainly on cultural agreements or similar arrangements between Finland and the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine.
Applications for the Finnish Government Scholarship Pool should be made to the appropriate authority in the applicant’s country.
Eligibility:
The applicant must:
- Intend to pursue post-Master’s level studies as a visiting student, participate in a research project or teach at a higher education institution or public research institute in Finland; priority will be given to doctoral studies
- Have established contact with the Finnish receiving institution before applying
- Have a letter of invitation from the academic supervisor in Finland; the invitation should also explain the commitment of the host institution to the project
- Have earned a Master’s-level degree before applying
- Not have spent already more than one year at a Finnish higher education institution immediately before the intended scholarship period in Finland
- Be able to give proof of sufficient skills in speaking and writing the language needed in study/research
- Be a national of one of the eligible countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine.
Scholarship:
A monthly allowance of EUR 1200. The allowance is sufficient for one person only.
Expenses due to travel, international or in Finland, are not covered by CIMO. Scholarship recipients are recommended to make arrangements for sufficient insurance coverage for their stay in Finland.
Application:
The announcements for the opening of the annual application round are usually sent out from CIMO at the end of September annually. The applicants may then contact the scholarship authorities in their home country for information on the national deadline for submitting the application documents. The scholarship authorities in each country are invited to present applications for up to 10 candidates for the Finnish Government Scholarship Pool. The deadline set by CIMO for the nomination of scholarship candidates by the national authorities is 28 February each year.

- Study/research plan (2-5 pages)
- Invitation/expression of interest from the hosting academic supervisor in Finland (this will be considered as an advantage in the selection process)
- Language certificate (Finnish, Swedish or English).
